Cab Screens Husqvarna – Maxxis British Championship Round 1 – Culham, Oxfordshire – 12th March 2017 – Race Report
Cab Screens Husqvarna deliver their race report from Round 1 of this year’s Maxxis British Championship, which kicked off last weekend at Culham, Oxfordshire.
Heavy overnight rain on the Saturday, plus persistent Sunday morning drizzle, made for a challenging and heavy days racing at round 1 of the Maxxis British Motocross Championship on Sunday. The event was being held at Culham near Oxford on a really well prepared track, with a number of firsts for the team:
1st national ride for Josh Peters in the youth MXY2 class
1st full season for Josh Coleman in MX2
1st full season for James Harrison on a 450 in the MX1 class (after having half a season on a 350 in 2016)
All this along with Dan Thornhill competing in MX1 again in his 3rd season racing for Cab Screens Husqvarna.
Qualifying was a tough affair as the rain still fell, especially for Josh Peters riding a 125cc two stroke against the majority of more powerful 250cc four stroke machines. Though Josh still put in a strong time with 14th fastest. Josh Coleman placed 33rd in MX2 while Dan and James had good qualifying sessions placing 11th and 13th respectively.
MX2 – Josh Coleman kicked racing off in the MX2 class and was battling well inside the top 30, when a huge stone jammed his back wheel around 4 laps into the race. The stone was so jammed it took another 3 laps to dislodge it and Josh’s race was done.
Josh had a much better race 2, and after a poor start in the 40 strong field, worked his way up through the field to a decent 26th place.
MX1 – Dan and James took to the line for race 1 as the rain stopped and both got off the line well. James was 10th at the end of the first lap with Dan in 13th. Early in the race, James passed ex-British champ, Brad Anderson, before Brad got him back again and James ended up an excellent 10th, with ex-GP winner Gert Krestinov closing in on the last lap. Dan was holding a strong 13th place until lap 5 when he had to pull out of the race due to a mechanical issue.
Race 2 and Dan was keen to make amends and was 14th at the end of lap one, with James further back in 18th. On lap 3 the two team mates battle was on, as Dan and James started swapping places in around 14th and 15th place, before James edged away with a few laps remaining moving into 12th, with Dan following closely behind, despite a late slip, in 13th. Overall this gave James a great 10th place with Dan placed 17th overall due to his first race DNF.
MXY2 – Josh Peters was always going to be on the back foot at Culham against more powerful machines, but he made good progress in race 1 making passes all race long, despite a few falls, and moved from 24th at the end of lap 1, to 16th place at the flag. Race 2 was another test for Josh and a poor start saw him end lap one in 35th place and he made his way through the field to an impressive 18th place and an 18th place overall.
